Quality Instruments Bring Musical Inspiration

Posted on September 24, 2010

For one of my first blogs I would like to steer you towards my Basses page.  I believe it is through having quality instruments that makes musical inspiration easier flow.  When an instrument ‘plays itself’ you will want it in your hands more frequently.

Just a few details about each -  My Taylor bass is strung specifically with piccolo strings.  This allows me to compose my own material easier as bass chordings sometimes end up muddy sounding.  Altered tunings also make for regular interest for new overtones and interesting chord fingerings.  This was originally showcased on the SOUNDESCAPE self entitled release in 1997 and I hope to have available for purchase via downloads later this year or early next year.  The entire ‘Falling Awake’ CD is played on this instrument plus the fabulous accompaniments I was so blessed to have by the great artists the CD features.

The 5 string Bassline acoustic Worp bass is a semi-acoustic fretless that has upright qualities in their patented design.  I love the nylon tape wound low B (.128) through G (.060) as it adds to that acoustic sound and still allows for amazing sustain and slide for harmonics.  I like to keep this in a standard tuning.  The fretless 5 Bassline Worp Art is just plain sick.  I have strung this in an extended range with a low (.115) to a high (.016) and sometimes switch what is in between depending on my mood.  This electronics were finely perfected by Bassline per my request.  It has a bartolini soapbar, a bartolini jazz and a piezo in the bridge.  These are all blend-able with each other or can be used individually and all with their own EQ.  This is my latest addition and new love, but has offered great challenges in incorporating fingerstyle picking and chording on a fretless instrument.

Finally, the ESP LTD tenor 4 mostly stays hidden in its case.  I do occasionally break it out, but I feel their are so many monster fretted players that I personally like to focus my time trying to improve my fretless skills or just write new material.  If anyone would like more detail regarding any of this information, or would like to see additional photos, just let me know.

~ peace ~
