Hey all! Just been recovering from a fractured radius on my fretting hand and trying to get in any playing I can. This has brought great new perspective to a real inconvenient situation as I was trying to do some tracking for a new CD. As of 3 days ago I was finally able supinate my left hand enough to fret some single note stuff, but chords and harmonics while maintaining the ‘chord’, eludes me still. So, unwilling to set down my bass, I have resorted to new altered tunings and incorporating different right hand picking patterns (with my fingers) to try to keep it interesting. I have been laying down chords via stacking on my loop station and then using an unfamiliar altered tuning trying to figure my way around the neck while keeping it melodic. For those of you that have not tried this I highly recommend it. It is great for ear training, gets you out of your comfort zone for ‘known’ finger positions/scales and challenges your melodic abilities while incorporating your theory. When you start to get comfortable in the chords, try adding new key changes or time signatures to keep you on your fingers (not your toes). If this doesn’t challenge you enough, try to switch one of your lower strings with a tenor or piccolo string and then tune it up an octave and go the the fifth, seventh or ninth or whatever sounds good to you. This will make you have to string jump in new ways to allow for good sonic flow, and changes how you approach playing chords. Most of all have fun and don’t take light of your practice time, it can all change in an instant!

For one of my first blogs I would like to steer you towards my Basses page. I believe it is through having quality instruments that makes musical inspiration easier flow. When an instrument ‘plays itself’ you will want it in your hands more frequently.

Just a few details about each - My Taylor bass is strung specifically with piccolo strings. This allows me to compose my own material easier as bass chordings sometimes end up muddy sounding. Altered tunings also make for regular interest for new overtones and interesting chord fingerings. This was originally showcased on the SOUNDESCAPE self entitled release in 1997 and I hope to have available for purchase via downloads later this year or early next year. The entire ‘Falling Awake’ CD is played on this instrument plus the fabulous accompaniments I was so blessed to have by the great artists the CD features.

The 5 string Bassline acoustic Worp bass is a semi-acoustic fretless that has upright qualities in their patented design. I love the nylon tape wound low B (.128) through G (.060) as it adds to that acoustic sound and still allows for amazing sustain and slide for harmonics. I like to keep this in a standard tuning. The fretless 5 Bassline Worp Art is just plain sick. I have strung this in an extended range with a low (.115) to a high (.016) and sometimes switch what is in between depending on my mood. This electronics were finely perfected by Bassline per my request. It has a bartolini soapbar, a bartolini jazz and a piezo in the bridge. These are all blend-able with each other or can be used individually and all with their own EQ. This is my latest addition and new love, but has offered great challenges in incorporating fingerstyle picking and chording on a fretless instrument.

Finally, the ESP LTD tenor 4 mostly stays hidden in its case. I do occasionally break it out, but I feel their are so many monster fretted players that I personally like to focus my time trying to improve my fretless skills or just write new material. If anyone would like more detail regarding any of this information, or would like to see additional photos, just let me know.
