“Falling Awake” is Jeff’s first solo album.
But solo may be the wrong word. This CD is truly a collaborative
effort with some of the top bassists playing today, including
Yves Carbonne, Tony Franklin, Russ Hodges, Jonni Lightfoot,
Michael Manring, Brady Muckelroy, and Jeff Schmidt. I love the
concept behind this album. Jeff recorded the main chord structures
for each track on a custom built 4-string piccolo acoustic bass,
playing it in the same manner that a standard acoustic guitar
would be played. But with the heavier bass strings you can hear
a distinct tonal difference. The notes sound fuller, like an
acoustic guitar on steroids. Jeff sent a track to a particular
artist to record a melody and then merged the two to create
the final track.
The result is an album of superb playing and great tonal depth.
We hear everything from an 8-string fretless sub-bass to standard
4-string fretted and fretless basses, tenor and piccolo basses,
straight and processed signals, and EBows. Each artist puts
his particular stamp on his track, making for a diverse set
of tunes held together by Jeff’s finger style chordal
playing. But not all tracks are collaborations. Jeff also treats
us to three truly solo efforts that demonstrate his melodic
sense and impressive technique. The overall sound of the album
is laid back and relaxed.
Jeff has also provided a way for others to participate. The
final track on the album is the appropriately named “Things
to Come”, a solo 4-string acoustic piccolo bass piece
without accompaniment. Jeff invites all of us to record our
own melodic interpretations of this track and send them to him.
He will randomly pick the tracks he receives and post them on
his website, www.jeffdoddonbass.com.
If you’re looking for what is possible with the bass as
a solo or melodic instrument, do not pass this disc by. Put
it in your player, sit back with a glass of wine and relax to
some soothing sounds.
